Spectral studies on the interaction of capsular polysaccharide (SPS) isolated from Klebsiella serotype K34, with oppositely charged dyes and surfactants have been reported. The SPS was acidic in nature and induced strong metachromacy (∼110 nm blue shift) in the cationic dye pinacyanol chloride (PCYN) which was due to "card-pack stacking" of individual dye monomers on the surface of the polyanions. Reversal of metachromacy offered a qualitative measurement of stability and nature of binding associated with PCYN-SPS complex. Thermodynamic parameters of dye-polymer complex were evaluated. SPS-cationic dye acridine orange (AO) interaction in aqueous solution have been investigated fluorimetrically. Dye incorporation technique was employed to study cationic surfactant-polymer interactions. Interactions between the polyelectrolyte and oppositely charged surfactants lead to the formation of induced premicelles at surfactant concentrations lower than the CMC of the surfactants and the corresponding binding constant was evaluated. Such studies revealed that the surfactant is not exclusively bound electrostatically, but also through hydrophobic interactions.Keywords

Capsular polysaccharide (SPS) is an integral component of gram negative bacteria, Klebsiella. The interaction of SPS isolated from Klebsiella K40 serotype with oppositely charged pure surfactants and cationic-nonionic mixed surfactants were investigated by dynamic light scattering and viscometric technique. Variation in the hydrodynamic radius and zeta potential were studied by dynamic light scattering method. Nature of the interaction is governed by concentration of the surfactants, charge density, surfactant head group and the CMC of the surfactants. Micellar effects of the pure and mixed surfactants on binding with the SPS are presented in this paper.Keywords

This paper presents a method based on iterative fast fourier technique for placing nulls in prescribed directions by amplitude-only control method in the radiation pattern of scanned linear array of uniformly spaced isotropic antennas with fixed dynamic range ratio of amplitude distribution and minimum peak side lobe level. Two examples have been presented, one with 20 isotropic antennas for placing two nulls and another with 22 isotropic antennas for placing wide null. Dynamic range ratio in both the cases has been fixed at 4.0.The method uses the property that for a linear array with uniform element spacing, an inverse Fourier transform relationship exists between the array factor and the element excitations.Keywords

The joining behaviour between stainless steel and copper has an importance in scientific and engineering applications such as high energy ring vacuum chambers and International Thermonuclear Fusion Experiment Reactor (ITER). In this research, the rapidly solidified foils of nominal composition 50Cu-40Mn-10Ni (C50) are used as a filler alloy for brazing between stainless steel (304 SS) and copper (Cu) plates. It is examined that C50 foil makes a good contact joint between two dissimilar metal plates of different thermal conductivities. The brazed region is mostly free from any porosities and intermetallic compounds, emphasizing on the distribution of solid solution phases. It causes high bonding strength of 304 SS-Cu butt joint at low brazing temperature (BT=920°C) with a fracture at the joint area. On the other hand, the fracture occurs at Cu base metal for BT = 980°C. The fractography also shows the presence of several dimples at Cu substrate and severely deformed region at stainless steel substrate, representing a good quality bonding between 304SS and Cu plates.Keywords

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a worldwide ‘One Health’ problem. The spread of AMR has limited the treatment options against infectious diseases. Inappropriate use of antimicrobials, is a major contributor for the development of AMR and its spread. In animal husbandry, antimicrobials are used for treating infectious diseases and in sub-therapeutic concentrations for growth promotion and disease prophylaxis. The use of antimicrobials in sub-therapeutic concentrations exerts selective pressure on bacteria and results in the emergence of bacterial strains resistant to one or more antimicrobials. The food animals raised on sub-optimal doses of antibiotics become reservoirs of resistant bacterial strains, transmitted subsequently to man and the environment. Various human, animal and environmental health agencies have decided to jointly address this problem. Establishment of integrated and harmonized AMR surveillance programmes, reduced use of antimicrobials in animal production, good governance of veterinary services, and development of new antimicrobials and their alternatives are some of the AMR management strategies in animals. Antibiotics are indispensable for human health; however, they should be totally banned in the food animals to preserve effectiveness of these drugs. In India, use of antimicrobials in food animals is limited for disease prophylaxis and growth promotion. However, absence of uniform regulations on the use of antimicrobials in animal production threatens the rationale use of these drugs in livestock.Keywords

The World Organization for Animal Health (formerly Office International des Epizooties OIE) listed pathogenic shrimp virus, infectious hypodermal haematopoetic necrosis virus (IHHNV), has been detected in a specific pathogen free (SPF) declared consignment imported from an approved SPF vannamei broodstock supplier to India. The Aquatic Quarantine Facility (AQF), Chennai the only Government-approved quarantine premise for ensuring the SPF status of imported Penaeus vannamei broodstock detected this pathogen during its routine screening process. The AQF, which has so far screened about 1068 SPF batches of vannamei consignment, recorded that one particular batch imported to India was not SPF, though the exporting country declared the stock as SPF. The presence of the viral pathogen was confirmed by both nested PCR and quantitative PCR (qPCR). Sequencing data of the target viral genome revealed 100% similarity with the already published decapod penstyldensovirus-1 isolate IHHNV partial genome (GenBank accession no. KJ862253). The test results declared by AQF were further validated by the Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture, Chennai, which is the referral laboratory of AQF. As the import of non-SPF stock into the country is a source of biosecurity threat, the entire batch was incinerated according to the standard operating procedure of AQF. Thus the stringent biosecurity measures and disease diagnostic strategies followed at AQF served to safeguard the industry from this virus, which would have otherwise gained entry into the country through the falsely claimed SPF stock. This communication highlights the importance of SPF stock and detection of IHHNV.Keywords
